Prime Infra inaugurates 64MW Tanauan solar power plant

31 May 2024

Prime Infrastructure Capital Inc. (Prime Infra), through its wholly owned subsidiary Prime Solar Solutions Corp., on Friday led the inauguration of its 64-megawatt solar power plant in Tanauan, Batangas.

Leading the event were Department of Energy (DOE) Undersecretary Rowena Guevara, Prime Infra President and CEO Guillaume Lucci and Director Christian Gonzalez, Prime Solar Director Donato Almeda and President and CEO Atty. Cherry Mendoza, Batangas 3rd District Representative Cong. Ma. Theresa Collantes, Batangas Provincial Governor Hermilando “Dodo” Mandanas, Vice Governor Mark Leviste and Tanauan City Mayor Sonny Collantes.

“The completion of this plant is really a special milestone for us. This plant, combined with the other plant in Maragondon will be the first set of solar power plants that will be operated by Prime Infra and its subsidiary, Prime Solar. It’s certainly part of a wider portfolio strategy that we have, along with our other renewable projects. These projects truly play a key role into achieving our primary commitment which is to build better lives and resilient economies through critical infrastructure—the kind of infrastructure that is socially relevant,” said Lucci.

Prime Solar’s two solar power plants – one in Tanauan, Batangas and one in Maragondon, Cavite – will supply up to 128 megawatts of clean, renewable energy from its solar power plants, powering about 84,000 households and displacing over 100,000 tons of coal per year.

Prime Solar has a 50-megawatt, 20-year power supply agreement with Meralco, and will supply the rest of its output to the grid.

“We are thankful to our offtaker Meralco. We have a long-term contract to fulfill, and we look forward to doing just that and hopefully connect this plant, as quickly as possible, so as to distribute energy and release pressure on the grid,” said Lucci.

The Tanauan Solar Power Plant which broke ground in April 2023, employs the most advanced execution technology. The power plant utilizes digital twin technology, drone verification of progress, optimized string sizing, and 24/7 quality assurance/quality control monitoring both at factory and at site.

Speaking on behalf of Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla, Undersecretary Rowena Guevara expressed congratulations to the inauguration of the Tanauan Solar Power Plant.

“Completing the construction in around 12 months shows the efficiency and teamwork that brought this project to its realization. The Tanauan Solar Power Plant represents a significant milestone in our transition to clean energy future to achieve national renewable energy program target of 35 percent in the generation mix by 2030, and 50 percent in 2040,” Guevara said.

The local government of Batangas also showed its support to the project, noting its benefits to the people.

“The benefits of this project extend far beyond the environmental impact. The construction and operation of this plant created numerous jobs for our constituents and stimulating our local economy. It demonstrates a beacon of innovation, showing that sustainable practices and economic growth can go hand in hand. I hope this project will set the precedence for future projects related to renewable projects,” said Cong. Maitet Collantes.

“Putting in perspective what Prime Infra is doing, not only in Batangas but really all over the place, this shows a very important infrastructure. I would like to assure, as governor of the province, that we will continue to support, to promote, the vision you have,” Mandanas, for his part, said.

Mayor Collantes meanwhile highlighted that the project will contribute to the sustainability of the city of Tanauan.

“This power plant is a stepping stone towards a sustainable and resilient city. We will continue to pursue ambitious projects together with the private sector. We will support innovative solutions and engage our community in efforts to protect and preserve our environment for future generations,” he said.
